Book Review: Penny White and the Humility of Humans by Chrys Cymri

It’s the end of an era for me – but it doesn’t have to be for you. Do yourself a favour and start reading the Penny White series.

Blurb

Raven changed direction, flying us towards the town. The helicopter followed suit, tracking us from around a hundred feet away. Wind from the whirling rotor blades blew my hair around my face. I flinched as a voice blared through loudspeakers. ‘Enemy combatant, land now!’

The dragon reared into a hover. ‘I’m not your enemy! And I recommend you don’t make me into one!’

The time I’ve spent away from Lloegyr has given me time to make some important decisions, but now I have to face the consequences. Marrying Raven has certainly complicated my relationship with the Church and Bishop Aeron. And there’s renewed danger from Cadw ar Wahânas the secretive group takes new action against those who dare to find love outside their own species.

There is also troubling news coming out of England. The British government is rounding up Lloegyr refugees and placing them in detention centres. My family has gone into hiding. And somehow the rat kings are involved with it all. Protecting the country and the people I love has never seemed so hard before…

Review

Ok, this is book nine so there is no way I can review it without giving away any spoilers. What I’m going to tell you instead is why you should read the Penny White series.

If you are a fan of Harry Potter or His Dark Materials, you will love this series. It’s the perfect blend of reality and fantasy that will help you forget the world for a while. The magical world the author has built in this series is amazing, as are the characters. Human, dragon, gryphon, whatever, you will end up loving each and every one.

However, the Penny White series isn’t just a fantasy series to get lost on. Each of the books touch on different key topics, whether it be loss, inter-racial relationships, homosexuality or simply believing in yourself. Religion is also a big topic that is dealt with. Don’t let the fact that Penny is a reverend out you off. This series provides an non-biased overview of what religion is and means for different people.

I read the entire series over the course of a few years. Now that it has come to an end, I feel like I’ve lost some good friends. Still, I’ll be doing my very best to keep them alive by recommending the series to everyone I know. Is that you? Check out my first review here and get yourself started!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
