Review

I have to admit that Two Kinds of Blood started out shakily for me. Although I was initially excited that the book immediately jumped into the action, I soon began to feel that, because I hadn’t read the first book in the series, I didn’t have enough context to understand what was really going on and who the characters were.

The first third of the book is also quite heavy in police procedure and I was beginning to feel out of my depth. Then, suddenly, the book changed and I was hooked. See, while I appreciate the level of detail that went into Two Kinds of Blood, I like to have more information on the characters; I need to create some kind of bond. I was beginning to think that this wasn’t that type of book and then the author introduced Bridge’s mother and some back story on Séan Flannery and that’s when things really took off for me.

All of a sudden, I had the character development I needed to balance the well-thought-out storyline and the wonderful descriptions. I became engrossed in the wonderful descriptions and the fast pace of the book. Two Kinds of Blood ended with plenty of surprises and that great ‘aha!’ moment when everything clicks.
