Book Review: Once Upon a Time, Bitches by Branden LaNette

I was very excited to show you the cover of Once Upon a Time, Bitches a few weeks back. I’m even more excited to share my review of the book today.

Once Upon a Time, Bitches: Design Your Fairytale Life, Control Your Destiny, and Become the Hero in Your Story by Branden LaNette.

Hi, I’m Branden. That is me on the cover.
Yes, I have a boy’s name, a Mom bod, and the tattoos are not photoshopped.
Once upon a time I realized we all have a story, we all have a struggle and happiness is relative. I am not cynical or hardened, I am just stating the facts. Here’s the deal:

Prince Charming doesn’t exist.
Fairy Godmother is drunk.
Glass slippers don’t come 2 Day Prime Shipping from Amazon.

There is no magic fairytale, but if YOU work at it enough you can come pretty close creating your version with a happy ending. The best part is, in life you can continue to make edits until that sh*t reads exactly how you want it to.

You may not agree with everything I say in this book but the most important takeaway is that YOU have to be your own f-ing hero. No more damsel locked in a tower, bullsh*t. That ends now. Join me as I take you through my 7 Magical Maxims for creating a fairytale life. (I know what you are thinking: Branden, no one gets a fairytale life.) Can you stop being so damn cynical for two seconds and just go with this?

Is it possible to design a fairytale life? Control your destiny? Be the hero in your story? I believe you can and that’s why I wrote this book. I am going to make you a little uncomfortable. Back out now if you aren’t ready.
Sh*t is about to get real bitches…

Once Upon a Time Bitches Book Cover

The cover of Once Upon a Time, Bitches promised me a straight-talking self-help book – and that is exactly what I got. Branden is a real person with real problems. A mouth like a sailor as well but that made me love her all the more. There is nothing worse than getting advice from somebody who project themselves as having the perfect life. It is hard to take their advice seriously and it comes across as very condescending. I hung on every word Branden said. Now, I have to admit that her advice is nothing that we all haven’t heard before. Yet I hung on her every word. She laid her entire life bare for this book. I saw her falls and how she rose above them. Because of that I wanted to take on board what she said.

Once Upon a Time, Bitches is a short, easy to read so I’m not going to give away too much of the advice it offers. But if you do feel you need a taster before buying, here is what I got from it:

  1. Objects don’t make you happy long term
  2. We get comfortable with being the victim
  3. You must take control of your own life and happiness.

Sounds like the sort of thing you need? Then pick up a copy and start building your own once upon a time, bitches.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
