Today I have the sweetest love story/time travel journey you are likely to come across. No, it didn’t sound like my cup of tea first either, but it turned out to be an absolute delight.
A Different Time* by Michael K. Hill introduces us to 20-something-year-old Keith Nolan. Keith is a reserved comic book lover in a job he hates. His life is pretty mundane until falls in love with a remarkable young woman from the past, Lyndsey. However, the only way he can communicate with Lyndsey is by talking to her on a home video she recorded in 1989. To keep their conversation going, he must find more of her tapes—while forces work against them both, and time is running out.
This is a love story with a difference. Mostly so because it has an unrealistic element to it; the matter of time travel makes it difficult to guess how the story will end. I do enjoy a good fantasy book now and again. However, the entire book has to be totally out there or my mind can’t get over the fact that what is happening is extremely unlikely. This was not the case in A Different Time. Probably because I liked the characters so much that I didn’t care if the story was realistic or not; I just wanted them to be together.
Although A Different Time is a relatively short book, there were some deep themes hidden amongst a story of love and time travel. Both Keith and Lyndsey are people who went through something traumatic in their teens. Also, they are two people who have an escape – art and comics. It was interesting to me to see how they coped and how their love helped them blossom. There are some very touching lines in this book explaining the circumstances of Keith and Lyndsey that gave me goosebumps.
A Different Time was a very pleasant surprise for me. In a short amount of time, I felt a strong connection to the characters and felt many emotions. All the signs of a successful book, if you ask me.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
