Hello! I was really prepared over Christmas and the New Year so this is actually the first review I am writing in 2019. It was also the last book I finished in 2018. Luckily, it was a great book that gained these accolades.
The Fixer: The Naked Man* by Jill Amy Rosenblatt introduces us to Katerina, an NYC student in a desperate situation. She has two weeks to come up with $14,000 or she’s out of her apartment, out of school, and out of luck. Katerina enters a dangerous world as a ‘fixer’, quietly fixing the problems of wealthy and privileged men. Katerina soon learns two big lessons: there are no rules and, once you’re in, there’s no getting out.
This book really shows how desperate times call for desperate measures. Not so much for the men who hire the services of a ‘fixer’ (for whom there seem to be no consequences), but Katerina who enters the dark and murky underworld of the rich. The Fixer is a pretty short book and can easily be read in one sitting but because of its setting in this dangerous world, it is certainly not lacking action. Additionally, the story doesn’t feel rushed or lacking information. It even throws in some cliffhangers that leave the reader longing for the next installment in the series.
Despite the pages of drama, there is really only one main character in The Fixer: Katerina. I enjoyed having a lead female character in a traditionally male role. The males that appeared were underdeveloped and whether or not it was intentional, it worked. The reader can easily see the strength and will to survive within Katerina. However, everything is not based solely around Katerina. She also serves as a viewpoint into other elements of society: cheating husbands and wives, thieves, etc. It is interesting to see the situations people with seemingly perfect lives can get themselves into.
If you are looking for something short but intense to add to 2019’s reading list, The Fixer is a must. No doubt the other books in the series will be added swiftly after.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
