The days are getting colder, darker and shorter. Sigh. How can you bring more light to your life? By reading a funny book, of course!
Dear Mr Pop Star* by Derek and Dave Philpott is a collection of letters to pop and rock stars, either picking up on genuine ambiguities within their lyrics or often deliberately misunderstanding them for comedic effect. What started as a bit of a joke between the father and son gained them a large audience thanks to the wit and hilarity of the letters. So much so that the recipients even started to reply (the replies were published in this book with full consent).
This is one of the most original books you will read in your entire life. The letters from the Philpotts are so imaginative and completely out there at times and are a testament to their excellent writing skills. I mean, some of the biggest musicians in the world replied to them, that has to say something about the appeal of the letters, which just lure you in.
Music lovers will especially enjoy this book. I enjoyed the replies to the Philpots and felt they gave some insight into the musicians. Whether or not anything they replied was true, the letter offered a sense of their personality, depending on how the reply was constructed. Saying that there were some letters I skimmed over. This is a decently sized book and there were times when it didn’t catch my interest.
One more thing I want to comment on is the graphics in Dear Mr Pop Star. They are fabulous! The cover is particularly nice but the whole book just screams fun and colour.
Overall, I think this would make a good Christmas present. It is humorous and witty and will make for a good read together around the dinner table.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
