Book Review: Her Christmas Chance (A Christmas Creek Romance, #2) by Rachelle Ayala

Another Christmas post! So excited! In the past, I didn’t really read so many Christmas themed books but this year I can’t stop. Here is my next review for you – a real (Christmas) cracker!

Her Christmas Chance by Rachelle Ayala is based around Bella Tallahan, a woman born with cerebral palsy who has always hidden behind her twin sister, Tally. Bella is ready to become more independent as she develops a crush on Chance Martin, the brother of Tally’s husband, Lucky. Bella and Chance fall in love but Chance believes he is not the one for Bella due to his shady past. Will the reveal of his big secret ruin any chance of a relationship between the two?

The story opens in a very lighthearted manner – rightfully so for a Christmas story! Mr Klutz the cat brings the cheerfulness with his devious antics, although he does become, for me, one of the most annoying characters in the book – and I hate to say that about an animal!

Luckily it is Bella and not Mr Klutz who is the main character. Bella is unlike any other main character I have met in a book based simply on the fact that she has cerebral palsy. In fact, I’m ashamed to say that I have never read a book where the main character has a disability. From what I gather, there are not nearly enough books like there out there and that is what made Her Christmas Chance so special to me.

Ayala really succeeds in presenting to the reader the misgivings Bella has about herself because of her disability. The book went deep into how Bella wanted to be respected as an independent and capable person but how the judgement of others was making this difficult for her. And do you know what, this is something many of us are guilty of? Reading Her Christmas Chance reminded me to treat everyone one as equal, to be supportive rather than judgemental.

This leads us to Chance, the one person who is able to see Bella for the person she is inside. Their story is rather beautiful, not specifically because of the romance element, but for how Chase encourages Bella to live the life she wants. Saying this, their relationship could be overbearing at times. It was too sickly sweet. There was one sex scene that went through approximately three chapters that I thought would never end.

At times I urged the book to come to a conclusion because of how overbearing the relationship was. However, this was balanced by the chapters centred around Chance’s life: what exactly had he doesn’t to be given ten years in jail?

Overall, I very much enjoyed Her Christmas Chance and a nice feel-good story is ideal for this time of year.

Opposites attract and sparks fly in the delightful small town of Christmas Creek.

Holly Jolly lives for Christmas. It’s the only time of the year, as far as she’s concerned.

Gordon Gills doesn’t need a reason to hate the holiday season. He doesn’t see the point.

Gordon returns to the mansion he inherited and finds Holly making a mess with her Christmas decorations. Unfortunately, his great-aunt’s will stipulates that he must make merry every Christmas if he wants to keep his inheritance.

Holly is determined to infect the grouchy Gordon with every dose of Christmas cheer she can muster and show him what Christmas is really about.

Will Gordon prevail and turn Holly into a Grinch, or will a sprinkling of Christmas magic show Gordon that there’s no fighting love, especially when it’s wrapped up in a gorgeous redheaded package of jolly holly?
